Welcome

We developed this blog to provide golf course maintenance information to our members. From projects, small and large, to updates on course conditions, we want to provide as much information as possible. Although we hope this blog answers all of the pertinent questions regarding our operation, we always welcome more personalized dialogue. If you have questions beyond the information found on this blog, feel free to contact our golf course superintendent, Trevor Hedgepeth.

Kinloch Golf Club Enhancement Project - Week 4 Update

Friday, July 5th, Kinloch Golf Club, in conjunction with Landscapes Unlimited, began our summer-long, facility enhancement project. As we travel through the project, please check in for weekly blog posts which will update our progress.

Thanks for all of your support as we are very excited about this project and the product we will offer this coming fall!!!

This is the 4th Week Update!! Progress continues to be incredible!!

Between our last post, many of the same processes have continued at a fantastic pace. Although I could post more pictures of this progress, I thought for this post, we could explain some of the methodology behind our bunker renovation.

Below, you will see a link that walks through the Better Billy process. For those that do not want to watch the video, I'll provide a paraphrased narrative of why bunkers fail and how the Better Billy system eliminates that failure.

When a bunker is constructed, the sand is placed on compacted soil. For many years, the only barrier separating the sand from the sub-layer were various, fabric liners. Unfortunately, when rain falls hard, the velocity of the water runs between the sand and the soil layer. Because the water cannot readily infiltrate the soil, it begins to run down the slopes, dragging the sand with it. As the sand/silt mixture finds the bottom of the bunker, drainage is compromised and the problem begins to compound. Furthermore, as the rain continues to fall on the exposed banks, more soil and silt are washed on top of the initial erosion. As this happens time and time again, bunkers begin to fail.

The Better Billy Bunker System innovates by placing a 2" gravel layer between the sand and the sub-soil. This layer is then sprayed with a polymer that hardens the gravel, but remains very permeable. Thus, as rain pours through the sand, it then moves through the gravel before running down the slopes. Only now, the water cannot undercut the sand and drag it down the faces. Watch the two links below to learn more.

Next week's post will focus on the initial sod removal that will begin on Monday. Until then, enjoy these shots of the clubhouse renovation!
